should I do a 10k?

by eatpraytri on April 16, 2012

I said I would do four miles on Saturday and I did it. It wasn’t the greatest run of all time, but it was good. I felt strong. I felt capable. I kind of wanted to do more. I know, I have lost my mind.

Before:

IMAG1579

Mile 1: alternated running 1 min and walking 1.5 min to warm up

Mile 2: alternated running 1.5 min and walking 1.5 min

Mile 3: alternated running 2 min and walking 1.5 min

Mile 4: got in a  zone (LOVED IT) and ran for like 4 min (I think), walked for 1.5 and then ran another 3, then did a couple of sprint intervals at the very end. FAST! I was dying.

All running (except the sprints) was at 5.0 (12 min pace) and walking at 3.6

When I hit “pause” on the the dumb treadmill which I have a love/hate relationship with the time blinks and I have to take like four or five pics in order to get it just right so the time is showing RIGHT when the camera clicks.

IMAG1582

nope

IMAG1581

almost….

IMAG1583

FINALLY!

After:

IMAG1585

TOMATO FACE I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

IMAG1586

no idea? I think I was on an exercise high and was acting looney.

I felt great about it and instantly thought “I should sign up for a 10k!” I don’t think I am anywhere near ready for a half-marathon yet, but am feeling like I would like to bump it up a little and try for a further distance than just a 5k. What do you think. SHOULD I DO IT?!?!?

The rest of the weekend looked like this:

I am pretty sure at some point I will attempt a half marathon. Maybe. :) Rock n Roll is way too soon!!! lol. Maybe if it were later in the year I would start to think about maybe considering it…. ;-)

I totally would but I dont think we will be living here in November!! We weren’t even supposed to be living here now. GRRRRR. We pretty much can only plan things about three months out right now b/c of Paul’s job assignment that should be coming “any day now”. Sad face.

Totally do it! My dad always told me that if I could run half the distance of a race, I could run the full race, even if I never trained any longer. Sometimes I think he’s nuts…but I definitely believe that a whole lot of running is mental. (And when I run races, I never feel like they seem quite as far as training runs. I dunno.)

I’ve noticed that too! I think its the excitement of the day and all the people around to serve as distraction? I’m not sure. But I think I am convinced…10k here I come! :)

Calm down, girl. Do a 5k, then a 7.5, then a 10. You may be running, but what’s your hurry?

MOM! I’ve done lots of 5k’s. They don’t have 7.5k’s. No hurry, just want to work up to something! :)

Well, in that case, run your heart out! I’ll be happy to sit and watch while I’m there.

Yes! It really is all mental. I find it takes me a few miles to get into the zone. If you train right and add on the distance with a running plan you should be A-OK.

good advice! I need to get a plan!

Short answer: yes. I think you should do a 10k. Try to find one that’s still far enough away that you have enough time to train and feel comfortable. But I definitely think you can do it. No doubt in my mind!

I’m thinking maybe July-ish? So almost three months? That should be good right? Considering where I am at now?

Kristen @ notsodomesticated April 17, 2012 at 4:49 am

Yes, I think that would be good. Except for the fact that July is usually crazy hot. ;) But other than that, I think the timing would make sense!

ha! true for most places, but Seattle never really gets crazy hot. And if it does it doesn’t last long. So hopefully the day of the race won’t be one of those random days when it gets above 80! ;-) *crossing fingers*
