BOOM.
How’s that for a starter pic?
Do you know what these are? They are French Macarons.
Not “regular” or “non-French” macaroons or as I like to call them “little balls of disgusting grossness”.
When I first heard about the other kind of macaron (spelled differently too) I was super confused. I saw them in a Starbucks a few years back, but because I had always associated the term “macaroon” with “coconut” I turned my nose at them {since I’m weird and don’t like coconut}. Please don’t send emails. I know its weird.
But then somehow I discovered that these had nothing to do with coconut. And they were all such pretty colors. I had never tasted one but I wanted one desperately.
Turns out macarons are not all that easy to come by. It’s not like I went on an exhaustive search or anything but I just never seemed to find any. I could order some online…but really? That just seems a little weird to me. Ordering cookies on the internet? Screams desperation or laziness or something else highly indicative that I need to get a life. So I held restraint (much like I did with the cheese) and prevented myself from clicking “add to cart” and busting out the credit card.
Then, in Vegas I finally happened upon some. It was a bag that had six tiny little cookies in it. I dropped the cash and was on my way to see if they would live up to the hype in my mind about what they might taste like.
They were better.
Drats. Now not only do I think they are so fun to look at, but I love the way they taste too.
Slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are like a meringue texture-ish and made with almond powder.
Here is what wikipedia says about them.
My friend Peggy has told me about a couple of places around town that make/sell them. I’ve been meaning to go and scope it out, but both places are kind of out of the way for me and with my luck I would make a special trip and I would walk in with a huge grin on my face only to be greeted with “I’m sorry, we just sold the last one….”.
So yesterday I’m just gettin some work done and one of the dreaded Groupon Goods emails pops up. I say dreaded because the “goods” are usually so good that at some point before I even know what’s happening I am clicking “order now” and texting Paul about what how much money I just saved by switching to Geico on something that we probably (in the grand scheme of things) don’t really need.
I scroll down the email and what do I see?
Yep. I’m doin it.
Desperate.
Lazy.
Whatever it is, it’s happening.
24 assorted flavor French Macarons are headed to my doorstep.
I couldn’t be more excited.
***I was not compensated by the French for this post. I would gladly review anyone out there who makes/sells French macarons in exchange for said cookies. If anyone is looking for birthday, anniversary or “just because I like you” gifts…here you go…no further research need be done.

I have had macaroons in the past before, but believe it or not, they were actually way TOO SWEET for me! Maybe if I make them in my own kitchen, the turn out will be much better!

I stand with you!! I can’t stand coconut! And I stand with you again in the love of a good macaroon! I was first introduced to them when some friends I was housesitting for brought me back some from Paris. THEN, when they took me to NYC with them, we went to the NYC store of La Duree and got some more!!
The caramels were my favorite…. Oh! BTW! Thanks a lot, cause now I’m drooling.
People against coconut!! We should start a club or something. Paul hates it too. I am beside myself with jealously that you got to try one FROM Paris. I’m contemplating a trip to Paris just to get some. Its getting ridiculous.

Hahaha, you are too funny! I love macarons, but haven’t indulged in a looong time. Maybe when we make our trip to NYC or some other big town, I gotta scout out some good bakeries and patisseries. Thanks for making my stomach growl…no macarons for me!

Hahaha you crack me up. “I was not compensated by the French …” Hilarious!!
To be honest, I’ve only tried a French macaron once, and I didn’t really like it! But maybe I’ll try another one when I’m actually IN France in a couple of weeks! Maybe it will taste better there!

Oh Em Goodness! I forgot you are going to FRANCE!!! You are gonna get the BEST ones of all time! Their birthplace. Green with envy over here. What will it take for me to convince you to bring some back for me? I am at your mercy.
