Well I’m kind of crossing off another one on the CinnaList. Well half of it anyway.
Check out my new baby.
Thanks to my wonderful mom who can’t help but celebrate my birthday in January! (its next month for those of you who don’t know. The 23rd to be exact. Go ahead and get a pen and write it down.)
So I say half of it is crossed off because the item itself was a two parter.
Get a new camera and teach myself how to use it.
So one of those is done but I still have no idea how to use it. Well, I read the little book that comes with it, so I can technically operate it, but the functionality is so far waaaay beyond my skill level. BUT I am determined. And I am smart (I like to tell myself I am anyway) and I bought a book and I have blog friends who know how to use these guys. One of them (thanks Joanna) already pointed me to a fantastic resource in this blog. I read through all of her photography posts on Sunday night and I already feel 63% smarter!
I took my new friend out for a little spin around the living room and neighborhood last week and want to share some of my snaps. Then I will tell you about our weekend adventure.
Thoughts? I know I have a lot to learn!!
Ok, so on Saturday we went and sat in hot water in the middle of snow. Sound interesting? Read on.
Paul found out about some hot springs up near Bishop (about 2 hours north of us) from a co-worker. We put on our swim suits, sweat pants, jackets and hats and headed out for an adventure.
Along the way we stopped in Lone Pine where there is a great view of Mt. Whitney, which is the highest summit in the contiguous United States. It is a mere 84 miles from the lowest point in the United States which is at Badwater in Death Valley.
Now you can impress people at parties. You’re welcome.

Then we stopped in Bishop and had lunch at the famous bakery. Lots of people have told us about this place, so we HAD to check it out. It did not disappoint. Well actually it did, b/c there was a big sign on the door that said, “No photography inside” BOOOO. And I had my new camera locked and loaded.
I DID take pictures of my food. I figured they couldn’t yell at me for that could they? And if so I would just tell them it was for an article I was writing. Totally not a lie.
Vegge sandwich with THREE (see them?) slices of Gouda (heaven) and a side of tater salad. Both were delish! We got some sweets for the road and went to find a place for the dogs to stretch their legs. Oh yeah…we brought the dogs with us.
We were at the stop light wondering which way to turn and then we looked across the street and there was a sign right in front of us that said DOG PARK with an arrow. Couldn’t have planned that better.
The pups made some friends and we had a great time watching them all run around.

After everyone took care of their business and got good and tired we headed out to the hot springs. In the middle of the snow.

No pics of me in the hot spring. No one wants to see that.
It was like 13 degrees outside, but the water was crazy hot. Like a hot tub. I kept asking where the jets were but Paul was ignoring me.
It was a little weird sitting in it because you couldn’t really see the bottom and it was kind of pebbly and muddy BUT nonetheless it was beautiful to be sitting out there in the middle of all that gorgeous snow and scenery. #verycool.
On our way home we stopped again in Bishop and had some chinese food. Then we stopped at the yarn store (what????) and then we found this deserted area so the boys could go and be boys.
Yep, the were shootin them guns. All manly like. I took pictures of sunsets and stayed in the car and crocheted. All lady like.
I lie. I did go out once and shoot the handgun once and the shotgun once. I didn’t want to show the boyz up with my awesome skillz though so I headed back to the car to keep the pups company and stay nice and warm while they finished with all their fun.
His eyes look crazy. But the hat looks good, right?
See that awesome cup in the background? That is my new Tervis Tumbler that I got for Christmas. I love that thing. Best. Cup. Ever.
The End.
What camera do you use?
Any tips or resources for me?
Have you ever been to a hot spring?
Are you excited to impress people at parties with your new fun facts learned in this post?

You have some great pictures, your dogs look like they are actually posing for the pictures. My dog hates it when I take out the camera. What book are you using to help out with taking pictures? I especially like the black and whites, great work!

Love the new camera! And by your pics, it looks like you’re already a pro at using it! I currently just use my lovely iphone as a camera, but I really want a nice one before my cruise in Feb!
The hot springs sound awesome! I’ve never been in one.

Beautiful photos!
I went to hot springs in Colorado – loved the experience.
Do you watch Modern Family? I watched the latest episode online last night – Claire and Phil end up at a spring…it’s funny.

I think I would love that hotspring… in the summer!
And, by the way, feel free to send your “wonderful mom” some of that “original sheepherder bread” on a regular basis. I think I could live on bread (maybe with a little peanut butter…).
Tell Kyle I love seeing him in his Lobo sweatshirt. Big game tomorrow in Boise.
well darn it, I should have got you some. Maybe next time we go up there…not sure when that will be.
And yes, he loves his Lobo sweatshirt!

I’m a Nikon girl, so I have no Canon pointers for you, but I can tell you that a great book is Understanding Exposure. Also, a “For Dummies” book about your camera model is way more helpful than the book the camera came with.
I’ve never been to a hot spring, but it looked neat. I have been in an outside hot tub while it was snowing outside so I’m guessing it’s kind of like that but cooler.

thanks for the suggestion! Joanna mentioned that book too. I’m excited to start reading up and schooling myself!
yes, your description of the hot tub while snowing is pretty accurate.
